Which Calcium Carbonate Mill Is Suitable For Light Calcium Carbonate Production

Light calcium carbonate, also known as precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), is artificially synthesized via chemical precipitation processes, differing greatly from mechanically ground heavy calcium carbonate (GCC). PCC features fine primary particle size, high porosity, easy agglomeration, low hardness, and strict requirements for particle morphology and whiteness. The main task of milling for light calcium carbonate is not crushing ore, but de-agglomeration, dispersion and grading of aggregated PCC powder. Improper grinding will destroy its original crystal shape and affect product performance in rubber, plastic, ink and coating industries.

1. Suitable Mill Types For Light Calcium Carbonate

Air Classifying Mill (ACM Mill)

ACM mill is one of the most widely used equipment for PCC de-agglomeration.

  • Fineness range: 800 mesh to 3000 mesh
  • Advantages: High-efficiency de-agglomeration function, integrated grinding and classification. It can break up PCC agglomerates without damaging the original crystal structure. Simple structure, convenient fineness adjustment, stable particle size distribution. It is ideal for ordinary and medium-grade light calcium carbonate used in plastic fillers and general coatings.
  • Limitations: For ultra-fine high-grade PCC, the energy consumption will rise accordingly; strict control of feeding moisture is required.

Jet Mill (Fluidized Bed Jet Mill)

Fluidized bed jet mill is the preferred option for high-end light calcium carbonate.

  • Fineness range: 1500 mesh to 6000 mesh
  • Advantages: No metal grinding medium contact, low impurity introduction rate, protecting PCC whiteness and crystal form. Relying on high-speed airflow collision to disperse agglomerates. Excellent for ultra-fine PCC applied in high-grade ink, premium coating and medical-grade fillers.
  • Limitations: Higher energy consumption and investment cost; suitable for high-value PCC products rather than mass low-cost production.

Pin Mill

Pin mill is a cost-effective choice for low-to-medium fineness PCC de-agglomeration.

  • Fineness range: 400 mesh to 1200 mesh
  • Advantages: Compact structure, low investment, easy operation and maintenance. Mainly used to disperse slightly agglomerated light calcium powder for construction materials and ordinary rubber fillers.
  • Limitations: Limited ultra-fine processing capacity; not suitable for products requiring extremely narrow particle size distribution.

Ultra-fine Ring Roller Mill

Ultra-fine ring roller mill can be used for PCC processing with special modification requirements.

  • Fineness range: 600 mesh to 2500 mesh
  • Advantages: It can realize one-step grinding and surface modification by adding modifier during processing. Good for modified light calcium carbonate for plastic masterbatch.
  • Limitations: Need to strictly control grinding pressure to avoid crushing PCC crystal grains.

2. Core Selection Criteria For PCC Mill

  1. Primary Goal: De-agglomeration Instead Of Crushing
Unlike GCC, PCC already has tiny primary particles. The mill should separate clustered particles instead of smashing raw mineral. Over-grinding will change crystal morphology and reduce product performance.
  2. Moisture Control
Light calcium is prone to agglomeration when moisture exceeds the standard. The whole system needs heating and drying equipment before feeding to prevent powder adhesion inside the mill.
  3. Purity And Whiteness Protection
For high-whiteness PCC, select non-ferrous wear-resistant liners to avoid iron contamination which will lower whiteness.
  4. Product Application Scenarios
  • Ordinary rubber & construction filler PCC: Pin Mill
  • Medium-grade coating & plastic PCC: ACM Mill
  • Modified light calcium carbonate for masterbatch: Ultra-fine Ring Roller Mill
  • High-end ink, pharmaceutical and premium coating PCC: Fluidized Bed Jet Mill
  1. Environmental Configuration
Equip the production line with pulse dust collector and noise reduction device to meet local emission standards. Closed-loop negative pressure design prevents powder leakage.

3. Final Recommendation

  • Small-scale production, low to medium fineness PCC: Pin Mill
  • Medium-volume production, general PCC for plastic and coatings: ACM Mill
  • Medium plant producing modified light calcium: Ultra-fine Ring Roller Mill
  • High-end ultra-fine PCC with strict crystal form and purity requirements: Fluidized Bed Jet Mill
