How to choose a calcium carbonate mill for high-purity calcium carbonate

High-purity calcium carbonate usually refers to products with low iron, low heavy metal impurities and stable chemical composition, widely used in food additives, pharmaceutical excipients, high-end cosmetics, electronic materials and premium polymer fillers. Unlike ordinary ground calcium carbonate, the biggest challenge of high-purity powder production is to avoid contamination introduced during grinding, while maintaining consistent particle size, whiteness and chemical purity. Selecting a suitable calcium carbonate mill requires strict control over equipment materials, system sealing, impurity removal and process configuration.

1. Clarify high-purity calcium carbonate specifications

Confirm all critical indicators before equipment selection:

  • Chemical purity requirement: Set limits for Fe₂O₃, heavy metals, silicon and other impurity content. Different industries have different purity thresholds.
  • Particle size & PSD: Confirm target mesh or D97 value, whether it is coarse, medium or ultra-fine powder. Finer powder increases the risk of metal contamination.
  • Raw ore quality: The purity of finished powder starts from raw calcite or limestone. Even the best mill cannot compensate for poor raw materials with inherent high impurities. Check raw ore whiteness, iron content and mineral inclusions.
  • Application compliance: Food and pharmaceutical grades need to meet hygiene standards; electronic-grade materials require strict control of trace metal elements.

2. Suitable mill types for high-purity calcium carbonate

  • Ultrafine ring roller mill with non-metallic lining: Suitable for medium and ultra-fine high-purity calcium carbonate from 200 mesh to 2500 mesh. It can be equipped with ceramic or polyurethane liners to reduce metal wear pollution. It balances production capacity and purity control for medium-scale production lines.
  • Vertical roller mill with anti-contamination modification: For large-volume high-purity calcium carbonate. Replace conventional metal grinding components with alloy or ceramic liners. It features integrated grinding and classification, stable particle distribution and large hourly output.
  • Jet mill: Ideal for high-purity ultra-fine calcium carbonate above 3000 mesh. The grinding principle relies on particle collision instead of metal roller grinding, so metal contamination is extremely low. The downside is high energy consumption and higher operating cost, reserved for premium high-purity grades.

Note: Standard Raymond mills and hammer mills with ordinary steel grinding parts are not recommended for high-purity grades. Continuous friction between steel components will introduce iron impurities and reduce powder whiteness and purity.

3. Key evaluation criteria for high-purity grinding systems

3.1 Anti-contamination structural design

This is the most important factor. Check the contact parts between equipment and powder: grinding rollers, liners, classifier wheel, pipeline and hopper. Choose ceramic, high-purity polyurethane or special stainless steel instead of carbon steel. Avoid rust and iron debris mixing into finished powder.

3.2 High-precision classification system

A high-performance dynamic classifier removes coarse particles and maintains stable particle size distribution. Poor classification may bring in impurity-bearing coarse mineral particles and lower overall purity.

3.3 Iron removal configuration

Install magnetic separators at feeding and discharging sections to remove iron impurities from raw ore or minor wear debris. Multiple-stage iron removal is strongly recommended for high-end high-purity projects.

3.4 Sealed and clean system

Adopt fully closed negative pressure grinding circuit with efficient dust collectors. Prevent external dust and foreign impurities from entering the system. Easy cleaning design is required when switching between different batches to avoid cross-contamination.

3.5 Environmental and auxiliary system

Use clean dry air for classification and conveying. If moisture is high, add drying equipment to prevent material adhesion and microbial growth for food/pharma grade calcium carbonate.

4. Supplier assessment checklist

  • Review supplier’s existing high-purity calcium carbonate project cases, especially food, pharmaceutical or electronic-grade references. Ask for purity test reports from finished powder.
  • Verify material certificates of all powder-contact components, confirm liner and wheel materials.
  • Check spare parts of wear-resistant non-metallic components and their service life.
  • Confirm test grinding service: send your raw ore sample for trial grinding and conduct impurity testing before formal order.
  • Confirm supporting services including process layout, installation, operator training and routine maintenance guidance.

For high-purity calcium carbonate, purity control always takes priority over output and cost. If you produce medium and ultra-fine powder in medium capacity, modified ring roller mill is a cost-effective choice. For large-scale high-purity production, select lined vertical roller mill. For ultra-fine, ultra-low metal impurity premium products, jet mill is the optimal solution. Never use ordinary standard grinding equipment for high-purity production, as it will lead to unqualified powder and heavy economic losses.
