Which Calcium Carbonate Mill Is Suitable For Humid Areas

Humid tropical or subtropical regions bring two core challenges: high moisture in raw limestone/calcite ore, and high ambient air humidity that causes powder agglomeration, sticking on grinding chamber walls, classifier blockage, condensate corrosion and finished powder caking. The vertical roller mill (VRM) is the top recommendation for humid areas due to built-in hot air drying. Other mill types can be selected under specific moisture limits with supporting anti-humidity configurations.

1. Recommended Mill Types For Humid Regions

Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) — Best choice for humid areas

  • Fineness range: 100 mesh to 2500 mesh
  • Advantages: Integrated drying, grinding and classification. Hot air flows through the grinding chamber, directly drying wet ore during grinding. It can handle raw ore moisture up to 10–15% in one system, avoiding separate rotary dryer investment. The whole system runs under negative pressure, preventing humid ambient air from entering. Anti-corrosion coating and anti-sticking lining can be added. It produces GCC for plastic, paint and paper filler, widely used in Southeast Asia, tropical Africa and South America.
  • Limitations: Higher upfront investment; requires professional maintenance.

Raymond Mill / Trapezium Mill — For low-moisture raw material in humid climate

  • Fineness range:80 mesh to 400 mesh
  • Advantages: Low cost, simple maintenance. Suitable for small-medium plants where raw ore moisture is controlled below 4–5%.
  • Limitations: No built-in drying function. If raw ore is wet, a standalone rotary pre-dryer must be installed. In high humidity, powder easily sticks to rollers and classifier wheel, leading to frequent blockage and output drop.

Ultra-Fine Ring Roller Mill

  • Fineness range:600 mesh to 3000 mesh
  • Advantages: Compact layout, adjustable fineness, optional online surface modification. Can be fitted with hot air inlet and anti-sticking liners for humid climate.
  • Limitations: Raw feed moisture must be kept below 3%; pre-drying system is mandatory for wet ore.

ACM Air Classifying Mill

  • Fineness range:800 mesh to 3500 mesh
  • Advantages: Mainly for PCC de-agglomeration. Closed air circuit design can add dry air supply to reduce moisture absorption. Hygienic 316L version available for cosmetic/food grade calcium carbonate.
  • Limitations: Very sensitive to material moisture; raw powder moisture must be strictly controlled below 1%. Not suitable for high-moisture raw ore.

Fluidized Bed Jet Mill

  • Fineness range:1500 mesh to 6000 mesh
  • Advantages: Closed airflow system with dry compressed air. Ideal for high-purity cosmetic, food and pharma calcium carbonate in humid regions.
  • Limitations: High cost; raw feed must be fully pre-dried to low moisture.

2. Key Selection Criteria For Humid Environment

  1. Integrated drying capability
The highest priority. For raw ore moisture over 5%, vertical roller mill with hot air drying is preferred. If choosing Raymond or ring roller mill, add independent pre-drying equipment.
  2. Anti-corrosion & anti-sticking design
All internal surfaces in contact with powder adopt anti-sticking lining and anti-rust coating. Avoid carbon steel parts prone to condensate corrosion. Install scraper components to remove adhered powder.
  3. Closed negative pressure system
Negative pressure operation prevents humid outside air from penetrating pipelines, mills and dust collectors. Equip pulse dust collector with anti-moisture filter bags to avoid clogging.
  4. Electrical and automation moisture protection
Control cabinet, PLC and motors must have moisture-proof, condensation-proof and IP54/IP65 protection, suitable for high RH workshop environment.
  5. Finished powder storage protection
Equip sealed moisture-proof silos with heat tracing and dehumidification to stop finished calcium carbonate from absorbing moisture after grinding.
  6. Surface modification option
Adding online surface modification (stearic acid coating) reduces powder hygroscopicity and prevents caking in humid storage.

3. Final Recommendation

  • Large-scale production, raw ore moisture >5%: Vertical Roller Mill with integrated hot air drying
  • Small-medium plant, raw ore moisture <4–5%, coarse powder: Raymond Mill + separate pre-dryer
  • Medium plant producing modified ultra-fine GCC: Ultra-Fine Ring Roller Mill with pre-drying system
  • PCC de-agglomeration in humid areas: ACM Mill with dry air circuit
  • High-end cosmetic / food / pharma grade ultra-fine powder: Fluidized Bed Jet Mill with dry compressed air
