Dry and arid regions (such as desert and semi-desert zones) feature low air humidity, dry raw limestone, high dust concentration in ambient air, large temperature difference between day and night. The main challenges are fugitive dust leakage, static electricity accumulation, accelerated wear of grinding parts, and thermal load on motors and electrical components. Since raw ore moisture is usually below 3%, most dry grinding mills can work well, but static protection, dust containment and heat dissipation must be prioritized.
1. Recommended Mill Types For Dry Areas
Raymond Mill — Most cost-effective for small & medium plants in dry regions
- Fineness range: 80 mesh to 400 mesh
- Advantages: Simple structure, low investment, no need for built-in drying system, perfectly matched with dry limestone. Stable operation for construction filler, mortar and low-cost PVC filler. Easy maintenance and spare parts replacement.
- Limitations: Not suitable for ultra-fine powder. In dry conditions, static charge builds up easily, so static grounding and anti-static filter bags are mandatory.
Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) — Best choice for large-scale continuous production
- Fineness range:100 mesh to 2500 mesh
- Advantages: Material bed grinding principle reduces direct metal friction and wear. Even though raw ore is dry, the hot air system can be kept standby for occasional wet ore. High output, low specific power consumption, integrated classification. Widely used for plastic masterbatch, paint and paper filler in dry mineral zones. Fully closed negative pressure design controls dust leakage effectively.
- Limitations: Higher upfront investment; requires good heat dissipation design for control cabinet under high ambient temperature.
Ultra-Fine Ring Roller Mill
- Fineness range:600 mesh to 3000 mesh
- Advantages: Flexible fineness adjustment, supports online surface modification for coated GCC. Compact layout for medium-sized factories producing modified ultra-fine filler. Works smoothly with dry calcite/limestone.
- Limitations: Static prevention and dust sealing are critical in dry environments.
ACM Air Classifying Mill
- Fineness range:800 mesh to 3500 mesh
- Advantages: Mainly for PCC de-agglomeration and modified calcium carbonate. Closed air circuit design. Dry raw powder is ideal for ACM processing.
- Limitations: Dry air will increase static risk; anti-static design must be fully configured.
Fluidized Bed Jet Mill
- Fineness range:1500 mesh to 6000 mesh
- Advantages: Material-on-material collision, ceramic lining option for high-purity cosmetic, food and pharma calcium carbonate. Dry compressed air fits perfectly with dry-area production.
- Limitations: High investment and energy consumption, only for high-value specialty powder.
Pin Mill
Used as pre-dispersion equipment for agglomerated PCC; simple mechanical design, easy static grounding.
2. Core Selection Criteria For Dry & Arid Environments
- Static electricity & dust explosion prevention
Dry air greatly increases static accumulation on fine calcium carbonate powder. The whole system must have reliable static bonding and grounding, anti-static filter bags, explosion vent panels and dust hazard assessment for powder finer than 800 mesh. - High temperature resistance & heat dissipation
Daytime temperature in dry zones can be very high. Motors, PLC and electrical cabinets need IP54/IP65 protection and forced air cooling to avoid overheating shutdown. Select heat-resistant cables and sensors. - High wear-resistant components
Dry limestone often contains silica impurities. High chromium wear-resistant rollers and liners extend service life and reduce frequent replacement caused by abrasive dry powder. - Full closed negative pressure dust collection
Dry powder is extremely easy to escape and float. The whole line adopts negative pressure operation with high-efficiency pulse dust collector to prevent fugitive dust pollution and protect operators. - Air intake filtration
Dry outdoor air carries large amounts of sand and dust. Install air intake filters to prevent sand from entering the mill, classifier and fan, protecting internal components from abrasion. - Finished powder storage
Even in dry climate, sudden dew condensation at night may cause powder caking. Sealed silos with dust-proof design are recommended.
3. Final Recommendation
