Low-temperature and cold regions face challenges including freezing of lubricating oil, condensate and ice formation inside pipelines, brittle seals, reduced battery/PLC performance, and frozen raw material. The core goals of mill selection are anti-freezing, thermal insulation, cold-start capability, and protection of hydraulic, pneumatic and dust removal systems. These mills are widely used for GCC production in high-latitude zones, mountainous cold mining areas.
1. Suitable Mill Types For Low-Temperature Regions
Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) — Best for large-scale cold-area projects
- Fineness range: 100 mesh to 2500 mesh
- Advantages: Integrated drying, grinding and classification. The internal hot air circuit can be used to heat the whole system during startup to prevent freezing. The lubrication station can be equipped with electric heating. Closed negative pressure design reduces cold ambient air infiltration. Ideal for large GCC plants for plastic masterbatch, coatings and paper filler.
- Limitations: Higher investment. Must configure heating for oil station, pipelines and dust collector to avoid freezing.
Raymond Mill
- Fineness range: 80 mesh to 400 mesh
- Advantages: Simple mechanical structure, low investment for small-medium coarse powder production for construction filler. Easy to add heating jackets and thermal insulation layers.
- Limitations: No built-in hot air system. Raw ore may freeze into lumps in cold winter, requiring pre-thawing or crushing before feeding.
Ultra-Fine Ring Roller Mill
- Fineness range: 600 mesh to 3000 mesh
- Advantages: Flexible fineness adjustment, supports online surface modification for coated GCC. Can be fitted with heat tracing and insulation for pipelines.
- Limitations: Pneumatic conveying pipelines are prone to condensation and icing in cold weather; heat tracing is mandatory.
ACM Air Classifying Mill
- Fineness range: 800 mesh to 3500 mesh
- Advantages: Mainly for PCC de-agglomeration and modified calcium carbonate. Closed air circuit can adopt preheated circulating air.
- Limitations: Compressed air lines are easy to freeze; air dryer and pipeline heat tracing are required.
Fluidized Bed Jet Mill
- Fineness range:1500 mesh to 6000 mesh
- Advantages: Particle-on-particle collision, ceramic lining for high-purity cosmetic, food and pharma grade calcium carbonate.
- Limitations: Compressed air system needs air dryer and anti-freezing treatment; high operation cost for cold regions.
Pin Mill
Used for PCC pre-dispersion. Simple structure, but bearings and seals need cold-resistant lubricant and insulation.
2. Core Selection Criteria For Low-Temperature Environments
- Lubrication & hydraulic anti-freezing design
Ordinary lubricating grease will thicken and solidify under low temperature. Select low-temperature resistant lubricating oil/grease. Install electric heating elements and temperature sensors for oil stations, with automatic heating and temperature interlock protection. - Heat tracing and thermal insulation for pipelines and dust collectors
All air pipelines, dust collector housings, valves and filter housings should be wrapped with insulation cotton plus electric heat tracing to prevent condensate icing, blockage and cracking. Drain valves must be installed to drain residual water. - Cold-resistant electrical and control system
Motors, PLC, frequency converters, sensors and batteries will lose performance at low temperature. The control cabinet should be equipped with internal cabinet heaters and thermal insulation. Choose low-temperature rated cables and components. Emergency stop and safety interlock functions must remain reliable under freezing conditions. - Raw material handling
In cold zones, raw limestone may freeze and form large lumps. A pre-crushing and raw material thawing/storage shed is recommended to avoid frozen blocks entering the mill and causing feeding jams. - Seal and material selection
Use low-temperature resistant rubber or fluorine rubber seals. Ordinary rubber gaskets turn brittle and crack under cold conditions, causing air leakage and dust escape. - Compressed air system anti-freezing (for ACM / Jet Mill)
Add refrigerated air dryers and pipeline heat tracing to remove moisture in compressed air, preventing ice inside nozzles and air pipes. - Dust explosion protection
Low temperature does not eliminate combustible dust hazards. For powder finer than 800 mesh, static grounding, anti-static filter bags and explosion venting panels are still required.
