How to Select Calcium Carbonate Mill for Gypsum Powder Processing

Gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate) is a soft non-metallic mineral with Mohs hardness of 1.5–2. Its special thermal property is the biggest difference from calcite: gypsum will lose crystal water and dehydrate if the local temperature inside the mill rises too high. When using a calcium carbonate mill system for gypsum dry grinding, the core selection principle is to grind to target fineness while controlling grinding temperature to prevent dehydration, and maintain powder fluidity and whiteness.

1. Confirm raw gypsum and finished powder specifications

Raw gypsum ore characteristics

  • Hardness: Mohs 1.5–2, easy to grind. Associated impurities such as clay, quartz and iron oxides affect whiteness and abrasion.
  • Temperature sensitivity: Natural gypsum loses crystal water at around 120–160°C and becomes hemihydrate gypsum (plaster of paris). Overheating during grinding changes product performance.
  • Moisture: Raw gypsum often contains surface moisture. Feed moisture should be controlled below 1.0%. Excess moisture causes caking and adhesion inside the mill and filter bags.
  • Impurity control: Iron-bearing minerals reduce whiteness for high-grade gypsum powder; pre-magnetic separation is recommended.

Finished powder key indicators

  • Fineness / PSD: 150–600 mesh for construction gypsum; finer grades (800–1250 mesh) for fillers in coatings and plastics.
  • Whiteness: Construction gypsum has moderate requirements; filler-grade gypsum needs whiteness above 88–90.
  • Crystal water retention: Critical index. Avoid dehydration and uneven hydration activity.
  • Capacity: Gypsum bulk density and grindability differ from calcium carbonate. Do not directly adopt GCC mill rated output as gypsum production capacity.

2. Core evaluation criteria for gypsum grinding mill

Low-temperature grinding design

The mill must avoid excessive heat accumulation. High-speed impact equipment generates local hot spots, which easily dehydrate gypsum. Roller shear grinding is preferred, with good ventilation and heat dissipation inside the grinding chamber.

Adjustable air circulation and temperature monitoring

Use airflow to carry fine powder away quickly and take away grinding heat. Install temperature sensors in the grinding chamber and classifier. Set interlock alarm to stop operation once temperature exceeds threshold.

Wear protection and optional low-iron configuration

Ordinary steel wear parts are acceptable for construction-grade gypsum. For high-whiteness filler gypsum, upgrade rollers, liners and classifier blades to low-iron alloy or ceramic components to avoid iron contamination.

Suitable classification system

Static classifier works for coarse construction gypsum below 400 mesh. Variable-speed dynamic air classifier is required for fine filler-grade gypsum (600–1250 mesh) to achieve precise PSD control.

Anti-caking dust collection system

Gypsum powder easily absorbs moisture and sticks to filter bags. PTFE membrane coated filter bags are recommended. The pulse cleaning system needs adjustable blowing pressure and interval to prevent bag blockage.

Closed negative pressure sealing

Stable negative pressure prevents dust leakage. Rotary airlock valves are required at discharge points to maintain air balance.

3. Suitable mill options adapted from calcium carbonate mill systems

Option 1: Raymond Mill / High Pressure Ring Roller Mill

Cost-effective choice for small & medium production of construction gypsum (150–400 mesh)

  • Advantages: Low investment, simple operation, gentle roller grinding, less heat accumulation. Matched static classifier is enough for building gypsum requirements.
  • Limitation: Hard to steadily produce powder finer than 400 mesh; PSD is relatively wide.
  • Application: Gypsum powder for plastering, gypsum board and building materials.

Option 2: Vertical Roller Mill (VRM)

Preferred large-capacity solution (150–800 mesh)

  • Advantages: Shear grinding with good air circulation, easy heat dissipation, large continuous throughput. The drying function can handle raw gypsum with slight surface moisture.
  • Limitation: Must strictly control grinding temperature; not ideal for grades above 1000 mesh if crystal water must be fully retained.
  • Application: Large gypsum board factories and construction gypsum mass production.

Option 3: Ultrafine Ring Roller Mill

For medium scale fine gypsum filler (325–1250 mesh)

  • Advantages: Moderate investment, integrated grinding and dynamic classification. Ventilation design helps reduce internal temperature.
  • Limitation: Limited single machine capacity; temperature monitoring system is mandatory.
  • Application: Coating, rubber and plastic filler-grade gypsum powder.

Note: Ball mill + classifier system can produce fine gypsum powder, but long retention time inside the ball mill may accumulate heat. If you choose ball mill, optimize air sweeping and temperature interlock. Jet mill is not recommended, because high-speed impact creates local high temperature and causes gypsum dehydration.

4. Full system configuration checklist for gypsum processing

  1. Pre-crushing: Jaw crusher to crush raw gypsum to 10–40 mm.
  2. Temperature monitoring & interlock protection: Install temperature sensors inside grinding chamber and classifier.
  3. Pre-magnetic separator: Remove iron impurities for high whiteness grades.
  4. Classifier selection: Static classifier for coarse construction gypsum; variable-speed dynamic classifier for fine filler grades.
  5. PTFE membrane pulse dust collector to prevent gypsum adhesion and bag clogging.
  6. Optimized air sweeping design to carry away heat and finished powder rapidly.
  7. Rotary airlock valves to stabilize negative pressure.
  8. PLC control system for temperature, feeding and airflow linkage control.

5. Common mistakes during mill selection for gypsum

  • Directly use GCC mill without temperature control, leading to gypsum dehydration and unstable hydration performance.
  • Ignore gypsum’s moisture absorption property; ordinary polyester filter bags get blocked quickly.
  • Adopt high impact grinding, generating local overheating and changing crystal water content.
  • Copy calcium carbonate rated capacity; gypsum grindability and bulk density differ, so actual output will deviate.
  • Skip test grinding. Different gypsum ores have different crystal water and impurity content.

For gypsum processing using calcium carbonate mill systems:
Raymond mill is economical for small-medium construction gypsum below 400 mesh.
Vertical roller mill is the best for large-volume building gypsum production.
Ultrafine ring roller mill suits medium-scale fine filler gypsum up to 1250 mesh.
The most critical requirement is low-temperature grinding and real-time temperature interlock protection to preserve gypsum crystal water. Test grinding with your gypsum ore sample is strongly suggested before purchase.
