A 5 ton per hour calcium carbonate grinding line is one of the most popular medium-scale production configurations for GCC manufacturers. This capacity is widely used for continuous production of 150 mesh to 3000 mesh ground calcium carbonate, supplying fillers for construction materials, coatings, rubber, plastic masterbatch and paper industries. Improper equipment selection often causes actual output far below 5t/h target, unstable powder fineness, high energy consumption and frequent shutdown for maintenance. This article explains key selection guidelines for a calcium carbonate mill system designed for 5t/h finished powder capacity.
1. Clarify raw material, finished powder and site requirements
Raw material parameters
- Ore type: Calcite, marble or limestone. Hardness, iron content and whiteness will influence wear part service life and final powder quality.
- Feeding size: Raw stone should be pre-crushed to 10–50 mm. Uneven oversized feed becomes the first bottleneck to hit stable 5t/h output.
- Moisture: Raw material moisture should be controlled under 1%–2%. High moisture causes sticking and blockage inside the mill and classifier, reducing actual throughput.
Finished powder specifications (critical for mill selection)
5t/h is capacity target, but fineness determines which grinding host and classifier you need.
- Coarse powder (150–400 mesh): Easier to reach 5t/h, lower power demand.
- Medium ultrafine (800–1250 mesh): Needs matched dynamic classifier; capacity will drop if fineness increases.
- High ultrafine (2000–3000 mesh): More power consumption; the grinding host and classifier must be fully upgraded to maintain 5t/h finished output.
Important note: The rated 5t/h refers to finished qualified powder, not raw material feeding volume.
Site & utility conditions
- Workshop space, foundation load, available power supply.
- Environmental requirements: Closed negative pressure dust collection system must be matched to meet emission standards.
2. Core performance indicators for 5t/h calcium carbonate mill line
Actual continuous throughput
Many suppliers quote raw feed capacity instead of qualified finished powder output. You must confirm: under your ore and target mesh, can the line stably run at 5t/h for long shifts, not just short test peak output.
Matching between grinding host and classifier
For medium and ultrafine grades, the classifier is often the bottleneck. The classifier processing capacity must align with the mill host. If the classifier is undersized, coarse powder will circulate repeatedly and pull down final output below 5t/h.
Power consumption per ton of GCC
Calculate total installed power of the whole line, not only the main mill motor. Compare kWh per ton finished powder. For 5t/h continuous production, high specific energy consumption will create huge electricity cost over a year.
Wear parts service life
With 5 tons per hour continuous operation, cumulative material throughput is large. Check rollers, liners, classifier impeller and blade material and replacement cycle. Frequent spare part replacement cuts effective production time.
System stability and automatic feeding control
Variable frequency quantitative feeder is required to maintain steady material input. Fluctuating feeding will lead to unstable fineness and capacity drop.
3. Suitable mill solutions for 5t/h calcium carbonate line
Option 1: Vertical roller mill
Best choice for 5t/h medium mesh powder (150–800 mesh).
- Advantages: Compact layout, good energy-saving performance, stable continuous running, less auxiliary equipment.
- Limitation: Higher initial investment; high ultrafine grades above 1250 mesh will reduce output.
- Application: Stable 5t/h production for putty, ordinary coatings and plastic filler.
Option 2: Ball mill + independent air classifier system
Flexible solution if you need to switch mesh widely (800–3000 mesh) while keeping 5t/h qualified powder.
- Advantages: Excellent PSD control, strong adaptability for high-end ultrafine GCC, stable for high fineness grades.
- Limitation: Larger footprint, higher total power consumption, regular grinding media maintenance required.
- Application: Factories producing multiple grades including 1000/2000/3000 mesh powder for coatings, masterbatch and paper coating.
Option 3: Large Raymond mill / ultrafine ring roller mill
Only suitable for coarse to medium powder below 400 mesh.
- Advantages: Lower investment, simple operation.
- Limitation: Difficult to steadily reach 5t/h for ultrafine powder; PSD is wider.
- Application: Small-medium plant only for 150–325 mesh building filler.
Note: Jet mill is not economical for 5t/h GCC mass production due to extremely high energy cost.
4. Full line configuration checklist for 5t/h production
- Pre-crushing section: Jaw crusher + fine crusher to guarantee stable feed size.
- Variable frequency quantitative feeder: Stabilize feeding rate to avoid capacity fluctuation.
- Main grinding host matched with target fineness.
- Air classifier (static or dynamic according to mesh requirement), capacity matched with main mill.
- High-efficiency pulse dust collector: Closed negative pressure system for environmental compliance and powder recovery.
- Conveying and finished powder collection system.
- Optional surface modification unit: If activated GCC is needed, modifier capacity must match the 5t/h output.
5. Common mistakes when selecting 5t/h calcium carbonate mill
- Confuse raw feed capacity with qualified finished powder output. The raw input is higher than 5t/h due to internal material circulation.
- Select a host without matching classifier, so classifier becomes bottleneck and actual finished output falls far below 5t/h.
- Ignore ore grindability. Harder or high impurity ore will reduce real throughput even if model is theoretically rated 5t/h.
- Underestimate total power demand, only checking main motor power instead of the whole production line.
- Neglect continuous running test requirement; short trial run data cannot represent long-term stable 5t/h performance.
For a target 5t/h calcium carbonate production line, vertical roller mill is preferred for fixed coarse/medium mesh production. Ball mill plus independent classifier system is recommended if you need flexible grade switching for ultrafine powder up to 3000 mesh. Large Raymond mill can only be considered for powder below 400 mesh. When evaluating suppliers, focus on continuous qualified finished throughput, host-classifier matching, ton energy consumption and wear part performance. It is strongly advised to carry out test grinding with your ore samples and verify the real achievable output before purchasing.
