Calcium carbonate grinding mill turns raw limestone ore into fine ground calcium carbonate (GCC) powder via mechanical crushing, extrusion and airflow classification. The vertical roller mill is the mainstream model for large-scale GCC production, integrating grinding, drying, classification and discharging into one compact process. Ball mills are also used for ultra-fine powder manufacturing.
1. Working Principle of Vertical Roller Mill (Mainstream GCC Mill)
Core Internal Components
- Feeding unit
- Rotating grinding table & hydraulic grinding rollers
- Hot air drying channel
- Dynamic powder classifier
- Circulation fan and dust collection system
Step-by-Step Operation Process
- Raw Material Feeding
- Crushed limestone lumps are fed evenly into the mill chamber and drop onto the center of the spinning grinding table.
- Extrusion Grinding & Crushing
Driven by the main motor, the grinding table rotates continuously. Centrifugal force pushes limestone outward to the gap between the table and heavy-duty grinding rollers.
- Hydraulic pressure presses rollers tightly against the material bed. Limestone is squeezed, rolled and rubbed repeatedly, breaking solid rock into tiny calcium carbonate particles.
- In-situ Drying
- Hot air enters the mill from the bottom. Wet raw material fully contacts hot airflow during grinding, removing surface moisture and preventing powder agglomeration. Grinding and drying finish at the same time.
- Air Classification
- Ground particles are lifted upward by circulating air to the top rotary classifier.
- Qualified fine powder passes through classifier blades and moves onward
- Oversized coarse grains are thrown back to the grinding table for re-grinding
- Powder Collection & Final DischargeCertified fine GCC powder is separated from air inside cyclone collectors and bag filters. Pure finished powder falls down and is discharged for packaging. Purified air is exhausted safely.
2. Working Principle of Calcium Carbonate Ball Mill
This model relies on impact and friction grinding:
- Horizontal cylinder rotates with numerous steel grinding balls inside.
- Rotation lifts steel balls high, then balls drop down violently to strike and crush limestone.
- Material is ground fine through continuous ball collision and friction.
- Fine powder flows out through screen holes; coarse material stays inside for repeated grinding.
- It produces extra-fine GCC powder above 2500 mesh.
3. Key Operational Features
- Vertical roller mill: Layered material bed grinding, low wear loss, high energy efficiency, suitable for mass production of 325–2500 mesh GCC, low running cost.
- Ball mill: Better ultra-fine grinding performance, applied for high-grade superfine calcium carbonate products.
- Adjustable classifier speed easily changes finished powder fineness to meet different industrial usage demands.
- Closed air circulation effectively controls dust pollution during production.
