How To Choose A Calcium Carbonate Mill For Industrial Grade Calcium Carbonate

Industrial grade calcium carbonate includes ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and ordinary precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). It serves as low-cost functional filler widely used in plastics, rubber, paints, coatings, construction materials, paper filling and cable compounds. Compared with food or pharmaceutical grades, industrial calcium carbonate has relaxed limits on heavy metals and microbial indicators, while production capacity, energy consumption and overall operational cost become the primary considerations. The mill selection focuses on stable throughput, adjustable particle size, wear resistance and environmental compliance.

1. Suitable Mill Types For Industrial Grade Calcium Carbonate

Raymond Mill

Raymond mill is the classic cost-effective choice for coarse and medium industrial calcium carbonate powder.

  • Fineness range: 80 mesh to 400 mesh
  • Advantages: Low initial investment, simple operation and maintenance, low power consumption. It is stable for continuous production of ordinary filler powder for construction, mortar and low-grade plastic products. Small footprint and easy installation.
  • Limitations: Not suitable for ultra-fine powder below 400 mesh; limited hourly output compared with vertical roller mills.

Vertical Roller Mill (VRM)

Vertical roller mill is the mainstream equipment for large-scale industrial calcium carbonate production lines.

  • Fineness range: 100 mesh to 2500 mesh
  • Advantages: Large processing capacity, integrated grinding and classification, compact layout. Good particle shape, low unit energy consumption, high automation. It can produce multiple grades of powder for paper filling, plastic masterbatch and industrial coatings in one production line.
  • Limitations: Higher upfront investment; requires regular maintenance of grinding rollers and liners.

Ultra-Fine Ring Roller Mill

Ultra-fine ring roller mill is designed for medium-scale ultra-fine industrial calcium carbonate.

  • Fineness range: 600 mesh to 3000 mesh
  • Advantages: Flexible fineness adjustment, moderate investment cost. It can match online surface modification system for modified industrial calcium carbonate used in rubber and plastic fillers.
  • Limitations: Lower throughput than large vertical roller mills.

Air Classifying Mill (ACM Mill)

ACM mill is mainly used for de-agglomeration of industrial precipitated calcium carbonate.

  • Fineness range: 800 mesh to 3500 mesh
  • Advantages: Excellent de-agglomeration performance for agglomerated PCC. Integrated grinding and classification, convenient to add modifiers for surface coating.
  • Limitations: Higher energy consumption when running at ultra-fine grades; raw material moisture must be strictly controlled.

2. Core Selection Criteria For Industrial Grade Calcium Carbonate Mill

  1. Target Fineness And Production Capacity
Define required mesh size and hourly output first. Coarse powder (80–400 mesh) for building materials can adopt Raymond mill. Large factories with multi-grade powder requirements choose vertical roller mill. Medium factories focusing on 600–3000 mesh powder select ultra-fine ring roller mill. For industrial PCC de-agglomeration, ACM mill is preferred.
  2. Raw Material Hardness And Abrasive Impurities
If raw ore contains silica or other abrasive impurities, select high chromium wear-resistant liners and rollers to extend service life and reduce replacement frequency.
  3. Powder Application Requirements
  • Construction mortar, low-cost filler: Coarse powder by Raymond mill
  • Paper filling, mass plastic filler: Vertical roller mill
  • Modified filler for rubber, masterbatch: Ultra-fine ring roller mill or ACM mill
  1. Energy Consumption & Operating Cost
For long-term operation, pay attention to specific power consumption. Vertical roller mill has better energy efficiency for large capacity. Raymond mill is more economical for small-scale low-fineness projects.
  2. Environmental Compliance
The whole line must be equipped with pulse dust collectors and noise reduction facilities. Closed negative pressure design prevents dust emission to meet local industrial environmental standards.

3. Final Recommendation

  • Small plant, 80–400 mesh ordinary industrial calcium carbonate: Raymond Mill
  • Large continuous production, multi-specification powder: Vertical Roller Mill
  • Medium factory producing 600–3000 mesh modified GCC: Ultra-Fine Ring Roller Mill
  • Industrial precipitated calcium carbonate de-agglomeration: ACM Mill
